UNITED WAY COVID-19 RESPONSE & RECOVERY

The COVID-19 pandemic has touched every corner of our community. The United Way  COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund was created to address the needs arising from this unprecedented event, and support those impacted. While many are experiencing hardship, anxiety, and health concerns, we know that this crisis disproportionately impacts more vulnerable communities. We have been heartened by the way our community has come together to raise resources and look out for each other.

In early March, United Way began supporting Salem-Keizer schools with resources for families at food sites as well as providing food boxes for home-bound or medically fragile seniors. To date, we've provided over 1,900 boxes of food.  Additionally, we created a COVID-19 Nonprofit Grant to allocate funds to our community providers for purchasing items to help prevent the spread of the virus.

The United Way COVID-19 Response & Recover Funds awarded to community support agencies will help provide increased access to emergency food and basic supplies, rent and mortgage assistance, utility assistance, and nonprofit safety and operations assistance. We take our donors’ trust seriously. That is why we’re prioritizing nonprofits and community organizations that serve the most vulnerable populations, ensuring an equitable support level for all.

Food Supply - In the coming weeks, there may be decreases in the variety of food we are able to buy. As usual, the food supply is an ebb and flow, and our overall food supply remains strong. - Our food network as a whole could be seeing disruptions as grocery stores, food banks, and restaurants are all using the same distribution centers. - Agencies might not be able to purchase from the food-to-buy list as food supply continues to change for the network. We will be extending the expiration date on food-to-buy credits. - Items like split peas and lentils are going to be readily available.
